Opinion | Hank Azaria’s ‘Simpsons’ Voices Won’t Be Fully Replicated by A.I.

The New York Times: I imagine that soon enough, artificial intelligence will be able to recreate the sounds of the more than 100 voices I created for characters on “The Simpsons” over almost four decades. It makes me sad to think about it. Not to mention, it seems just plain wrong to steal my likeness or sound — or anyone else’s.

I genuinely don’t understand what the point of replacing voice actors with AI will do to move humanity forward. The whole point of stories is for humans to express their humanness to other humans. If you replace that style with a chatbot who can do a good impression it removes the whole point of stories in the first place. There’s something so important about having authentic performances from real people that I don’t think is possible to replicate with AI. As the article talked about, humans have whole lives of experiences they can pull from, they are just two dimensional beings, and if they were it would make their characters feel two dimensional as a result. I understand that cartoons are two dimensional beings, as in the physical space they take up is 2d, but if they had no personality, and no depth, people wouldn’t like them nearly as much as they do. So in response to this article, I think the answer is that characters cannot come alive in any meaningful way without real humans behind them.
