DeWalt 5-in-1 Drill/Driver Kit
JLC Online: As a carpenter and cabinetmaker, I sometimes find myself in predicaments where a regular drill just will not work. Whether it’s an odd angle that doesn’t allow me to get square with the screw head or a tight spot where I need to drill a hole but just can’t quite squeeze the drill in, there have been plenty of situations where I wished I had a solution. Enter the DeWalt Xtreme 12-volt Max 5-in-1 drill/driver kit.

I often wonder how far humanity will go in its search for the perfect drill/driver combo and I think they may have come to a close start with this one. The 5-in-1 Dewalt drill looks really cool and I'm sure it'll get the job done that you want but it looks really small compared to the other Sub-Compact 5-in-1 Dewalt drill/driver before. It looks like the drill is a little finicky when it comes to attaching the different heads. I feel like the answer to getting into tight corners with a regular drill though is to just get an extension bit? This tool is great but its just for convenience right? Maybe it's up to personal preference but when I'm building things I'd rather have the separate tool for the job rather than the same tool with a different head. It would be helpful for on site scenarios but if you're in your own shop I don't really think you need this.
It seems DeWalt will do anything to come up with the perfect most useless power tool, but here's to innovation? I can see the purpose in some very specific situations for these different extenders and 90 angle corner attachments to this driver. This very much seems like something that would show up on a 5 minute craft channel versus something that would be used in a real shop or carpentry case scenario. I do think it's kind of cool that they did manage to use what I assume are gears to make these different heads happen but I also agree with the article writer this might be more useful as an impact driver as often you are trying to get screws into really tight places versus trying to drill holes in really tight places. All in all it's one of those tools that you don't really need to own as it would only come in handy a couple of dozen times throughout its lifetime but it would come really in handy when it came in handy.

This past summer, one of the carpenters that I was working with had this combo set – I hated it. I have my own DeWalt drill and driver, and I love them. To be honest, I am a DeWalt girly; I know that a lot of people dislike DeWalt, but it has yet to fail me. A lot of my own tools are DeWalt, as were most tools in about half of the shops that I have worked in. Yet I still hated this thing. It is awesome in concept, it includes so may attachments to make it possible to do almost anything, such as the right-angle attachment, or the fact that you can switch back and forth between using it as a drill or a driver. I found that the tool did not have the strength that I needed it to, even when fully charged it could hardly drill through anything (even with fresh bits) and switching out the heads was not as quick as one thought. During longer changeovers this tool gave out very quickly. It was also just oddly small… Love DeWalt, but not a fan of this tool.
