The best theatre of 2022

Theatre | The Guardian: Jodie Comer made a sensational West End debut in Suzie Miller’s hard-hitting play, which is destined for Broadway in the spring. Best known for her TV role in Killing Eve, Comer proved she could be just as charismatic and commanding on stage, playing a lawyer who ends up in the witness stand after a sexual assault.

What I found most interesting about this article is how ‘modern’ all the shows listed are. Firstly, based on the photos, all of them are very minimalistic, with many strip lights, projections, small realistic sets, and costumes that I would consider everyday clothes. Secondly, I found it interesting how all the productions listed heavily concern today's social and political atmosphere. Even shows like the revival of Oklahoma! or Beautiful Evil Things, which is a new take on a variety of Greek tragedies, are highly modernized. Six of the ten shows are revivals or retellings. The show that was listed as the best of 2022 is Iphigenia in Splott, a monologue. I found this fascinating because I would never consider that a monologue would make it into even the top 10 shows of a year. The only shows I had heard of were Crazy for You and Oklahoma! perhaps this is because these are both revivals of classic musicals, which I am more familiar with, but I still found this article to be overall shocking and unexpected.
