We Want the Funk Festival brings legendary music acts to Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh City Paper: We Want the Funk Festival wants to prove that “funk is timeless and is at home everywhere.” That’s according to a statement about the event, set to unfold across two days full of performances from “chart-toppers to R&B-fusion groups to solo vocalists.”

I don't know how I've never heard of this Festival. its in its fourth year In Pittsburgh and I've never heard of it. I've just missed it now but. I will be really interested to read more about it and all of the difference acts that are a piece of it. the range of the acts seems really fun. R&B, soul, and jazz are guaranteed to make for an absolutely amazing time that is full of funk! It's also really cool that the festival is being opened by the award winning groups from the 70s. I love the idea of bringing some older music into a space where younger audiences can come to appreciate it and learn about where it came from. And where better to learn from than from the people who originated the style. I also love what Day said about finishing where you started and taking the time to appreciate where he came into music at the end of his career.
I personally love funk music and was drawn in by the title of the festival in the article. I like when folks work hard to bring a genre back to the mainstream and keep it alive, especially when it was and is so important to so many people. The general mission and the details of what kind of musicians will be involved seems really exciting and I'd absolutely love to go next time. I think it's important to preserve interest in less mainstream genres. I think it's good that they mentioned how much this genre has influenced other music throughout popular culture since the rise of it. As I was reading through the scheduled lineup I knew a couple of names and definitely wrote down others to add to my listening lists in the future. I think these kinds of festivals are great and let new fans and long time fans connect.
