Travels of a Scenic Artist and Scholar. Cobalt Studios 2019
Drypigment.net: I teach a specific class for Rachel Keebler at Cobalt Studios in New York once a year. Over the course of three and a half days, I lecture on historic scene painting, train students in handling dry pigment, and explain painting techniques while students complete several dry pigment projects.

I’m actually so glad that this article was posted on the ptm blog, because I’ve been considering taking a summer class at Cobalt! As someone who comes to CMU with primarily a visual arts background, and noticing that other scenic designers with a similar upbringing have worked there, I’m really interested in getting such an educational and intensive experience in scenic painting. What’s really amazing to me is just how much this course is able to cover (and how much progress the students seemed to make) in just THREE days! I think it’s really neat that the instructor teaches about the “sciencey” side of the mixing process, so that you know exactly what you’re working with, and are able to manipulate techniques and the mixing itself to yield interesting finishes and textures. I love that this instructor, while teaching a uniform concept, allowed the students to take creative liberty with their projects. With certain restrictions in terms of the “process”, but different objects and themes, I really do agree with the statement that it helps them to learn from each other. I also think that everyone painting the same thing tends to lead to comparison between people’s styles and abilities, and that ends up affecting confidence in one’s work.
