CLO's 'Double Threat Trio' is a small musical with a big impact
Pittsburgh Current: I want to open this review of Double Threat Trio with a salute to the SPARK program of the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera. This is an initiative to identify and develop new musicals for future generations. That may sound a little grandiose but what it means basically is that they’re investing in showcases and productions of “small” musicals: casts you can number on one hand, a band instead of an orchestra, scaled down sets and costumes et. al.

Small musicals are a lot of work even though they shouldn't be. Like I worked on a new musical and it was supposed to be sort of small but it really wasn't which made it super hard to work on and a pain to design. It is annoying to work on a show that is small because directors will try and control things more but also it is nice because there is less to work on. I really hope that this show does well because it seems like it could go so far and that impact that it is trying to make could actually work. There are a lot of shows where it is trying to hard and it will be a flop depending on how hard they are trying and how obvious their trying is. I hope that they do well because it seems cool I kind of want to see the show.
