Robe Supporting the Blackout Project

TPi: Robe is very proud to be the main sponsor of “Blackout” – a direct, uncompromising and fully visceral immersive visual and sonic installation created by Guildford School of Acting (GSA) lighting tutor Mig Burgess … to raise awareness of mental illness.

Blackout will be staged in the Bellairs Theatre at the University of Surrey, UK, and refers specifically to bipolar II disorder. The work is designed to offer a snapshot of what it’s like to experience the highs and crushing lows of bipolar II, what Mig describes as being “like the lights going out in your head”.

Mental illness is beginning to gain the legitimacy it deserves as both an issue in society and a non issue (in the sense that it is being recognized as health problem the same way you would naturally look at any physical health problem). In arts and entertainment there are more and more stories that begin to tell stories, but they, in my opinion, often miss their mark. Things like 13 Reasons Why and Dear Evan Hansen bring depression and anxiety to the forefront but their storylines are toxic and they only bring conversation of accepting others (which is good for sure) but not understanding them. How do you fully accept and correctly support who one is and how they must act without understanding what they’re going through. It can come off more as pity than as compassion. Art that shows rawly and plainly what a mental health disorder looks and feel like to the person who is experiencing it offers a real way to spread understanding. The creative and nearly immersive experience of this individualized experience gives the personal qualities that the current mainstream shows are not giving. Also as one fascinated by the brain, watching the neural pathways of one’s mind is just a really cool concept to me.
