Lighting Designer Xavier Pierce Lights White Noise
www.livedesignonline.com: Lighting designer Xavier Pierce relates strongly to Suzan-Lori Parks’ new play, White Noise, which is wowing audiences in The Anspacher at The Public Theatre, where it runs through May 5. A look at racism though the lens of friendship, media, and privilege, the play’s creative team also includes set designer Clint Ramos, costume designer Toni-Leslie James, projection designer Lucy Mackinnon, and sound designer Dan Moses Schreier. Read about the sets, costumes, projections, and sound design.

It is really interesting to read about the design process for a lighting designer. It is also pretty cool to read it and see how it might be different from or similar to the design processes of say scenic or costumes. I like how they included how the lighting designer connected to the piece in such a personal way. I think that when a designer has a personal connection to the piece or sees themself in the piece it can either positively or negatively affect the production, where they could over-design their portion or they could find really good balance because of that connection. I think that in this case, based on what I have read, the lighting designer has found that perfect balance because of his deep relation to the main character of the White Noise and how that has influenced his design. Overall, I found that this article was very interesting to read and gave a new perspective on the creative process when designing a show.
