Anthem: Homunculus review: John Cameron Mitchell’s podcast musical is a game-changing spiritual sequel to Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

slate.com: John Cameron Mitchell’s new podcast has been positioned by its producers and publicists as a game changer, the leveling up of an entire medium. Michael Bloom, the CEO of First Look Media, told the New York Times that his company signed on to finance the new star-studded rock musical Anthem: Homunculus because “the concept would be a magnet for the kind of talent that transcends what’s been done in podcasts to date.”

This is really clever as podcasts are becoming more and more widely listened to in this day and age, and with the love of Hedwig for its raw energy still simmering in the back of people’s mind, Anthem has a real potential to take off. There is a certain villainization of people who crowdfund for their injuries, sicknesses, or disabilities. Within a small community there tends to be a lot of genuine help, but the second it goes beyond that and stretches into the viral sphere someone tries to delegitimize it. With this being the background to Mitchell’s story, contrasted by the telethon nature that is missing from the impersonal, pleading pages of gofundme and the like, perhaps Homunculus can weave some humanity back into those that are just looking for a chance to survive. Being very recently released, I’m interested to see how it takes off and who the audience ends up being.
