This is actually a pretty cool project. I didn’t know this renovation program existed at USITT, and it seems a lot more legit than Tech Olympics. This reminds me a lot of our theatre architecture cross option class here at CMU. I know that our designers collaborate with architecture students on a new venue. I also know a lot of our more technically minded students aren’t as interested in the class. I think this would be an interesting project for our school to participate in though. It’s a good stretch beyond what we normally do, but requires the same level of problem solving and creativity. I do know that it’s probably a lot of work, which means it’s not likely anyone here would really be too interested in going through with it. But it could be integrated into a class as a project, and it would make the school’s presence a little more known at the conference.

@Emma Reichard: What a wonderful comment. I do the website and did the press release that is quoted above. ASTC will be delighted with your insightful comment. There are ASTC theatre consultants that have attended CMU. The ASTC-USITT Renovation Challenge would be perfect for a theatre technical/design student, and to add architecture students to the team is a great idea. The information page on the Reno-Challenge and how to apply for the 2021 Challenge is: https://theatreconsultants.org/astc-usitt-challenge/
Thanks,
Susan
