5 Theatres You Need to Know: Women's Theatre Companies in NYC
Theatre Development Fund – TDF: According to the Broadway League, women make up 66% of Broadway audiences, and we tend to be the overwhelming majority of theatregoers wherever shows are being performed. However, when you look beyond the house, our representation plummets. Although the number of professionally produced plays by women has been climbing over the past few years, gender parity in the industry is still a ways off.

I must admit I get a bit worry with the label of “women’s” theatre companies because were moving to a point that understanding the disparities in our industry goes beyond the outdated binary male and female system. But was happy to see that even though it was initially a “women’s” company the companies opened themselves to more groups other than cis-women which I think is essentially in supporting and advocating for diversity and inclusivity for the future of our industry. They’re also doing such cool work! Being a past history major I really enjoy seeing old-works re-imagined and I feel as multiple companies are doing this with fresh, inclusive perspectives. There is certainly still a gender disparity in the industry which some specific areas are suffering from more than others, additionally I believe that it is the creation and inspiration for companies like this that are leading us to improve our industry. Also Spicy Witch Productions, how awesome is that?
