This article was pretty refreshing to me, getting to know that there are Asian theatres here in america. Like I’ve stated in past comments, I grew up almost never seeing an Asian face, so for the most part I wasn’t aware of my culture, or that people like me could do something aside from be fetishized or made fun of. I’m happy to know that there are theatres that focus on Asian stories, and that Asian Americans have somewhere to go and represent. It’s something I wish I’d been exposed to when I was much younger. The productions that Ma-Yi Theatre Company is putting on seems really interesting, especially the one about Aokigahara. I read the description of the play, and I’m very interested in how it’ll be. I’m curious on the scenery, lights, sounds, etc. that goes into making a show as heavy as this one. How are they going to handle the topic of suicide and depression, and show it in an effective way? Pan Asian Repertory Theatre and National Asian American Theatre Company both also seem to have fascinating productions. Next time I go to New York, if I have the time, I would like to go check out one or more of these places.

This article was really great to read; I had never heard of these organizations before. It was cool to read a little snip-it of information on their work and what kind of art they focus in on. The National Asian Artist Project really stuck with me, firstly, because I love Baayork Lee'd work, but also because the mission to produce work with Asian artists that are not just token roles or stereotypical shows. I got to work with Ann Harada this summer and she is honestly one of the funniest humans I've ever met. I would love to see her in their production of Into the Woods. Another theatre company that seemed really interesting was the Noor Theatre Company. The company is not even a decade old but is producing work that is powerful and premiering new artists. The experiences of Middle-Eastern people are not often portrayed on stage, at least at theatre I've heard of, so it is really exciting to see a theatre company focused on telling those stories.
