#84 Jessica Paz

in 1: the podcast: This week’s brand new episode is with Sound Designer Jessica Paz! Jessica shares with us wild tales from her summers at the Delecorte Theatre with stories and insights from her recent designs for ‘Othello’ and ‘Twelfth Night’ as well how the sound department battles wind, rain, helicopters and yes raccoons. That Othello featured an all female design team, (recently featured in the NY Times) and she shares her thoughts on something that is both a great achievement but also shouldn’t have to be. Cory and Jessica chat about advancements in speaker technology being used on the ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ tour, how she works with a mixer to find the perfect sound for a show, and the continued push to get all designers, especially Sound Designers, proper credit and respect.

This podcast is pretty long, especially compared to most of the articles on this blog, but it’s worth a listen. Jessica Paz is one of the premier women in theatrical sound design and, as noted towards the end of the podcast, may be on the way to becoming the first woman to solo sound design a Broadway show. Her insights into how different types of productions are handled from a sound perspective are interesting, even if you are not looking to go into sound. If nothing else, it’s an entertaining interview with a wide breadth of stories of various productions. I always find it refreshing to hear the perspectives of both women and sound designers (as both seem to rarely find themselves on the front end of microphones) on relatively mundane topics. This podcast does a good job of getting beyond standard interview topics like career paths and industry news and digging up Jessica Paz’s feelings and perspectives on everyday things like favorite parts of production and tech week eating habits. I think its a valuable profile for women in sound that sometimes find it difficult to find role models to look up to.
