I always struggled to understand why laser cutters were so expensive. Is it because of the R&D that has to go into the unit? Could it be the fact that there isn’t enough demand out there to bring the price down? It is baffling to think that some laser machines can reach upwards of $30,000… That’s the price of a nice car… When you think about the expensive elements of the machine what comes to mind? Pretty much everything but the laser itself is standard to CNC machining, nothing special there. So this leads me to believe that whatever is in that laser tub must be worth its weight in gold…
But maybe not… this article leaves the reader thinking that laser machines are essentially in the same class as a home printer. That is pretty revolutionary considering this technology was pretty much out of reach unless you were in a university setting.
