Catching up on the News about the Old Globe's world-premiere Huey Lewis musical
The San Diego Union-Tribune: Huey Lewis, the hit singer-songwriter and harmonica ace whose scads of pop hits include “I Want a New Drug,” “Hip to be Square” and “The Power of Love,” is about to test the power of his music to drive a big stage musical.

Here we are again with another juke box musical. Don’t get me wrong I love me Mamma Mia and Jersey boys but besides that Jukebox Musicals need to not happen. Every year there always seems to be a new jukebox musical and it never does well. For example, Escape to Margaretville already closed even though they opened in April. Personally, I feel like Jukebox musicals are a bit lazy as most of the creation of the show has already been done. Most of the time these shows aren’t even that good. One interesting aspect of this article was the interview with Huey. He seems to have lived a very interesting life. He mentioned that he lost his hearing and as a musician that’s a very hard thing to overcome. It was nice to see that him helping with this show was therapeutic and I hope he enjoys this process. Hopefully his hearing will get better and maybe he will even be in the show at some point.
One of my favorite artists released an album yesterday, and she mentions Huey Lewis in the chorus of one of her songs. I am not too familiar with Huey Lewis, and this lyric stood out to me, so when I saw that there was a section on this blog dedicated to him, I had to check it out. I know Evan commented a while ago that we do not need another jukebox musical, and I totally agree, but it was nice to read about how this project helped him cope with his hearing problem. This problem has affected his ability to discern pitch, so having productions of actors singing his songs must be some fraction of compensation. Also, it must help that he has so many other hobbies such as fly fishing and surfing. I have not heard much about this musical, but I hope it was a successful and fulfilling experience for everyone involved!
