This article is geared towards lighting, but the lessons taught within it are applicable to all aspects of theatre. The author emphasizes the importance of exploring a variety of options when implementing or creating a design. This lesson is even relevant in our Design and Production curriculum, where we must brainstorm about project ideas and the right tools and materials to successfully represent it. Some options may be cheaper, some more durable, so it is vital that one completes the proper amount of research before investing. In regard to lighting, the author, Steve Irwin, explains that designers may have brand loyalties, but the decision to purchase must expand beyond that notion. Irwin brings up the point of multiple usage—can these light fixtures contribute to multiple looks, or are they necessary for a single effect? This is an important aspect to consider, especially for universities or theatre companies, who could use these instruments for future productions.
