First of all, although it is somewhat tangent to the core point of the article, may I just say that I absolutely loved Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Although the original Star Wars trilogy will always live in a special place in my heart, however, the characters were fairytale-like in their strict conformation to certain archetypes: the hero, the princess, the rogue, etc. In traditional Star Wars, there is literally the Dark side and the Light side, people are either good or evil. There is no room for shades of grey. I feel The Last Jedi brought ordinary people into the universe: interesting, three-dimensional people who were not necessarily "special" in any way but were still extraordinary: like Rose Tico. And surprise, surprise: there are people, there are heroes, in this world who are not necessary cishet white men. I think what happened to Loan after the release of The Last Jedi is disgusting and I feel so sorry for what she had to work through as a result: the toxicity of our culture in regards to POC and women. I am so happy she has risen from the flames like a phoenix and I cannot wait to see what she does next.
