'Waitress' serves up more than just sugar and spice at the Benedum Center
Like tiny bells in a church, the soothing vocal harmonies of these three words guide Jenna through “Waitress,” one woman’s journey of self-discovery and a life of pie.

I had the pleasure of getting to see this show while it was still at the American Repertory Theater in Massachusetts. It was actually the first piece of professional theatre I ever saw live, and it really was spectacular. I think that part of the reason that it has caught so much hype, and the reason it went to Broadway so quickly, is because Sara Bareilles wrote the music. Because of her influence and mainstream pop music influence, more people ahd this show their radar – people who are not usually drawn to the theatre. I think that this musical is another case of theatre going mainstream and thus catching popularity and publicity quickly. There is not as much hype about this show as there was about Hamilton or as there is about Dear Evan Hansen, but I think that this musical can be grouped with them as a part of this, what I like to call, Mainstream Theatre. I mean not to say that this is a bad thing, it is bringing a different audience to the theatre. The only fear I have is that this new genre will outshine other pieces of theatre, causing them to have short runs or be under-appreciated because of the lack of ticket sales in competition with these mainstream pieces. But I do not know. I guess I will have to wait and see. Regardless, I love Waitress, it is a lovely story with great music, and I'm excited to get to see the show again this weekend at the Benedum.
