Stage review: 'The Bodyguard' delivers hit songs with a big, bold bang

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: You hear the word “overblown” bandied about when it comes to the movie and the live show of “The Bodyguard,” as if that’s necessarily a bad thing.

Does the musical subscribe to the big bang theory of sound and staging? Unabashedly. Do the songs invite you to party as if it’s the ’90s? Absolutely.

This past week I got the opportunity to shadow the stage managagment team on this show. I really enjoyed getting to see the machinics of doing a national tour. One thing that I had found very interesting was that most of the set was automated. This is different than most tour that have very little automation. While I did not get too see most of the show there was some parts I did get to see. The media used in the show was very cool. It helped tell the story and fit in well with the other elements. The songs were obvisuly great as we know they work on there own. Overall though the story line is fine. This show was supposed to be going to Broadway but is not going to anymore. The show is good but is missing that thing that makes it a broadway show. Also Deborah cox was not the best in the part but could sing it really well. I don’t think I would recommend this show.
