olafur eliasson's reality projector turns former theater into an abstract film

www.designboom.com: from now through august 2018, filling the vast 13,500 square-foot theater gallery at los angeles’ marciano art foundation is ‘reality projector’ — an abstract, three-dimensional film-based installation devised by olafur eliasson. the seemingly simple, yet highly complex artwork integrates projected light into the existing architecture of the space to create a dynamic shadow play. driven by an interest in perception, movement, embodied experience, and feelings of self, eliasson seeks to engage the broader public sphere through this careful architectural intervention.

“driven by an interest in perception, movement, embodied experience, and feelings of self, eliasson seeks to engage the broader public sphere through this careful architectural intervention.” This idea, as stated in the article, truly embodies what Eliasson’s work is doing within the space. Though appearing simplistic in nature with the layering of shapes, each image is so thoughtful and precisely laid out that it embodies a nature that is immersive in nature, surrounding the audience and captivating them, while playing off the natural architecture and beams within this theater. Each individual image captivates a layering of colors, that move and overlay, to make the viewer connect and feel something. This type of projection design and media installation, is simplistic in appearance, but complex in process and artistic design, as media tends to do. This is they type of thing that makes media so incredible and so evocative, which is part of the reason why I am so interested in it. I am so intrigued by this work, and I hope the nature of it will influence other designers in a similar (or contrasting) way.
