Kit Harington: Prejudice against 'responsive' audiences threatens to kill theatre

News | The Stage: Doctor Faustus star Kit Harington has leapt to the defence of young theatregoers, claiming that prejudice against “energised and responsive” audiences could kill theatre for good.

The actor hit back against producer Richard Jordan, who complained in The Stage that audience behaviour at a recent performance of Doctor Faustus left him “despairing”.

Honestly, I am rather torn in my belief. On one hand, I completely agree with Richard Jordan: some of the behavior displayed from audience members at theater make it not only difficult to enjoy the performance from the audience, but it also makes it difficult to put on a good show for the actors. On the other hand, Kit Harrington has a point. Older theatergoers believe that the younger theatergoers talking and using their phones is disrespectful and it is their way of ignoring the performance. IN truth, that is simply our way of responding to what we are seeing. This is a problem that will continue to plague the theater world. Kit Harrington is right; the stereotypes that surround theater-going behavior are what pushes many young folk away from the theater. On the other hand, if that sort of behavior continues with theater, live theater will become more like a movie.
