Stephen Schwartz, Princess Cruises pact on four new musicals

Variety: On the night of March 25, the Princess Cruises’ 35,000-square-foot rehearsal facility in Valencia, Calif., came alive with the sound of music – the music of Broadway composer Stephen Schwartz.

Schwartz was in Valencia to deliver a taste of what’s to come out of his new deal with Princess Cruises, a first of its kind pact that see the three-time Oscar winner and composer of “Wicked,” “Pippin” and “Godspell” in a multiyear deal to oversee the creative development of four new musicals to debut across the line’s global fleet over the next four years.

I think this is a very interesting business model that Princess cruises has decided to attempt here, and I'll be interested in seeing how this actually pans out for them. I can only imagine how much money they're paying to have this kind of production team, so I'm not sure how many more people they'll be drawing in because of this single unique experience. I find that, on average, most middle-upper class cruise lines have relatively high quality theatrical experiences, (in terms of spectacle alone, which seems to be the main focus in cruise entertainment experiences in general) so I don't see people being drawn to any particular cruise line simply for the evening shows. I'm hoping that this could be altered, simply for the fact that it draws more attention to our industry and could spark competition between the lines. Competition would also draw more money into the pockets of theatrical artists, which I personally see as a benefit to our industry.
