Pipe Wrenches from RIDGID - a Short History

www.toolstop.co.uk: “Since 1923, Ridgid has remained the symbol of certainty to dedicated professionals of the expert trades…This is why every tool that bears the Ridgid brand is engineered to the same high standards of quality, strength, and endurance as was that first heavy duty pipe wrench more than 80 years ago."

We were talking about tool brands the other day in advanced fabrication, most of us of course have opinions on the general quality and make of tools made by a certain manufacturer. My experience with RIGID tools is that they are not rigid when you want them to be, and brittle when you don’t want them to be . . . I didn’t realize until that conversation in advanced fabrication that they were THE name in pipe wrenches and pipefitting tools. It is kind of a shame that all of their other power tools have come to have a bad reputation. But, it is nice that their signature product has not become a cheap piece of plastic. Pipe wrenches have always been interesting tools to me. It is such a simple mechanism that is so efficient at doing what it is designed to do. The small teeth and the very subtlety racked jaw allow for incredible gripping and turning force. That particular tool is a very good piece of mechanical design.

I have never really worked with pipe in any form of construction except for hanging lights but I know about the tools. Ridgid has a long history with pipe fitting. from their pipe clamps, to their massive spinning cutters to the wrenches. I can picture the big pipe wrench hanging on my grandfathers basement wall with the big "RIDGID" protruding from the grip. Recently ridgid has been focusing on power tools as a Home Depot brand, a step up from ryobi, but even still they are not the highest quality of tool. A lot of ridgid power tools are made of cheap plastic which is upsetting for a a company with a history of such reliable tools. Now, I am going to home depot later today to buy a ridgid saw for booth for my fraternity because I can trust ridgid. With a 25 year service warranty I know that if something goes wrong I can get it fixed, and with a 3 year satisfaction guarantee I feel comfortable buying a $400 saw.
