Shonda Rhimes Tweets “HELL NO” in Response to Deadline’s “Ethnic Castings” Article
Flavorwire: Deadline managed to trend on Twitter for several hours yesterday after running an article which insinuated that this season’s “ethnic castings” on network television were “too much of a good thing.” The article incited the ire of Twitter and the world alike by arguing that “the pendulum might have swung a bit too far in the opposite direction,” and that “replacing one set of rigid rules with another by imposing a quota of ethnic talent on each show might not be the answer.”

The premise of the Deadline article is completely ridiculous and I am happy that so many people chose to call them on it. I think the last tweet that was posted in this article really hit the nail on the head in terms of wording the problem with Deadline’s and a good portion of the general public’s approach to the diversity displayed on television this year. It read, “@Deadline You are literally creating the problem when you label TV a white person's medium and suggest non-whites are a trend.” I think that the assumption that the proper default for a performer within many a entertainment platform is white is a problem that is going to continue to make changing the face of popular culture an uphill battle for a long time to come. People shouldn't think of diversity as a trend, especially since it isn't pulling pop culture away from reality as much as it is pulling it toward it.
