'Zoolander 2' Costume Designer on Mixing Humor and High Fashion
Hollywood Reporter: As if the fact that the second installment of Zoolander is underway wasn’t enough to get you shouting, "It’s a walk off!" with excitement, the film’s stars, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson hit the runway as their male supermodel characters at the Valentino show during Paris Fashion Week, gliding down the runway with Blue Steel seriousness and bringing some welcome humor to the high-end event.

I'm so excited for Zoolander two to come out. And the thing that amuses me the most about this movie is that it was filmed during fashion week. So my question is did they have a separate amount of models that would have to repeat on the runway or did they only have one chance to shoot these Zoolander moments on the run way.I only ask because the seek peaks of the runway didn't seem to repeat like a normal set would. And fashion week is really well known. I would be curious if they would do that for this one movie. I at least would expect a little bit of that to happen. Also, what was the cost for this movie to be able to be apart of fashion week? These are just questions I'm dying to discover. I'm fascinated by what movies can do, but in so little time. Hopefully the amazing Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson were able to pull through.
I have not been this excited for a movie in such a long time! But I have to say, that this marketing campaign, or rather publicity stunt, was so well planned out and executed. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson nailed the fashion runway and played their characters very well. I enjoyed this article because I think, for me at least, costume design for movies is somewhat different than for theatre. There may be more attention to detail in half of a costume for film because you only see the character from the waist up, but for theatre, you are most likely going to be seeing the entire costume so it all has to be perfect. I like the interview with this designer a lot because she was dedicated to the type of film that is and recognizes what comes with designing high fashion for a comedy. To me, this would seem nearly impossible to be done well but she is confident! I am super excited to see this movie!
Leesa Evans has the opportunity to do in film what is normally done with theatrical costume design, and I'm sort of very jealous of her. She gets to fully imbue the costumes she designs for characters like Mugatu and Zoolander into the shapes, colors, and textures of their clothing. In most of the films I've seen that take place in 'modern' setting, costume designers take the easy route out and go as close to what is normal as possible. It's pretty fun to be able to make humorous comments on the way our fashion industry is going through clothing and film. I'm so happy that Zoolander is coming back for a sequel, even if I might be disappointed by the plot in the end. The world the directors and production team created was the definition of comedy: ridiculous situations taken extremely seriously by the ridiculous characters themselves. And the collaboration from the designers as well as the actors must make being on set a very innovative place.
