'Hamilton' Off to Hot Start at Broadway Box Office

NYTimes.com: “Hamilton,” the buzzy musical biography of an American founding father, is off to a strong start at the Broadway box office.

The show, which concludes a sold-out Off Broadway run at the Public Theater on May 4, has sold $6.5 million worth of tickets in its first 11 days of Broadway availability, and has orders from groups for another $4 million worth of seats, according to Jeffrey Seller, its lead producer.

My mom sent me a video about this a while ago, it sounds/ looks really interesting! i thought it would be similar to bloody bloody andrew jackson but it is actually just a lot of great history and a great story mixed with modern choreography and music. Alexander hamilton's life is full of action and drama and as the plays writer and star said, "why hasn'tt anybody made this a musical". what i thought was really inventive about this was the writer was able to tell the story and the life of hamilton while also entertaining an uninterested audience. The music, lights, and dances really cater to that younger audience. i believe that if they are able to tell the story the right way then im glad its doing great so far!

I’ve heard some pretty amazing buzz surrounding this musical, I definitely plan on seeing it when it comes to Broadway this summer, not only because it sounds like a fantastic show and has gained critical acclaim, but also because it’s a exciting new musical that’s emerging in a time of overwhelming revivals and Broadway duds. I don’t think this show will loose any momentum, if anything I think the suspense of the summer build up will pay off and theatergoers will flock to see this show at the first chance they get. I think this musical responds to a problem another article expressed, that there is a lack of new work for current audiences in the theater and we need to start changing that, well I think Hamilton is here to start. The Public Theater has always kept up the trend of producing new exciting work, and with their other musical Fun Home hitting Broadway soon, I think more theater companies should follow the example they’ve set and invite new works into their season in order to make room for new exciting works like Hamilton to emerge.

I was super impressed when I found out that Hamilton sold that many tickets in 11 days, but I wasn’t surprised by it at all. After the Off-Broadway run sold out two months before it opened. I wasn’t able to get a ticket, but over spring break I was lucky enough to be able to shadow the front of house engineer. It was such an incredibly fantastic show, and it lives up to all of the hype surrounding it. I really want to see it on Broadway at some point, but unfortunately I don’t think that’s going to be possible for at least a year. I think it’s great that a new show is getting so much good press and is so popular, considering the trend on Broadway to prefer safer shows and revivals. The concept of the founding fathers in a hip hop musical seems really out there, but it is such an excellent storytelling tool and this show makes the combination work. If anyone has a chance to see this show I highly recommend it, because it’s just an incredible concept and one of the best productions I’ve seen in a while.
