Women, Leadership, and Parity: Interview with Julie Crosby

HowlRound: With all of the conversations about gender parity, I have been thinking a lot about women and leadership and the particular problems that pertain to women at the top. Then I heard news of Julie Crosby’s departure from Women’s Project Theater under a cloak of secrecy and rumors. It felt important to me in this moment of heightened awareness of the role of women in our profession, and amidst the swirling gossip around what happened, to hear from Julie about her work over the last nine years. And so I asked Julie Crosby if she would sit down with me and talk about leadership and gender parity and Women’s Project Theater in the hope of bringing to light the person and her thoughts about these important issues.

Great interview with a wonderful woman! Something that resonated with me was the point about the focus on a woman's personality instead of her achievements. It's especially interesting to examine how aggression is perceived in men versus women-- the tendency to dismiss strong women as "bossy" comes to mind. A quality of society is to ingrain certain perceptions into people, which may manifest in unjust treatment. Not anyone's fault, but something that we (men, women, and anyone in between) should stay aware of.

I also appreciated Crosby speaking about the "retro"-ness associated with Women's Project Theater. The feminist movement is in a state of constant evolution, rendering previous goals obsolete. Once women's issues are sufficiently brought into light (as perhaps has already been accomplished?), hopefully organizations such as the Women's Project Theater can afford to shift goals from raising awareness and taking a stance to a true celebration of women and the art they create.
