Watch: America's First 4DX Movie Theater Opens, but Is the Experience Worth It?

Movie News | Movies.com: Last weekend was a pretty big occasion for film fans – not because Michael Bay unleashed another Transformers movie on audiences, but because it saw the opening of America’s first 4DX theater. If you thought seeing movies in 3D was a big deal, 4D is even more involved (and significantly more expensive).
The Regal Cinemas L.A. Live in Los Angeles has the distinction of being home to the country’s first 4DX experience – and the guys from /Film were kind enough to bite the bullet and see Transformers: Age of Extinction, then report back on the experience.

As shown in both the article and the accompanying videos, the concept of a 4DX theatre is revolutionary, and as a very positive progression towards immersion in a storyline that directors have been striving for since cinema first became popular. However, as all innovation has its “kinks,” 4DX theatre does as well. From the effect of water splashing on you becoming a nuisance to the sobering view of a very obvious smoke machine, some of the effects tend to bring an audience out of the story rather than into it. Altogether, 4DX theatre is an amazing concept and in incredible parallel between live theatre and the cinema where both factions of entertainment are starting to strive more and more towards full audience immersion. From art forms like interactive theatre to something like 4DX theatre, the gradual progression of technology and ideas is proving to improve the entertainment industry exponentially, and hopefully it will continue to do so in the future.
