Toni Collette: Hollywood’s gender imbalance is a grave problem
Salon.com: Toni Collette –Emmy winner for “United States of Tara” and Oscar nominee for “The Sixth Sense” — is hitting big screens again with “A Long Way Down,” an adaptation of the work of Nick Hornby, but she said that she gets recognized most often for “Muriel’s Wedding,” the second movie she ever made.

This is really cool. It’s refreshing to see a woman taking charge of herself. Collette saw where she, as an independent contractor, was vulnerable and took control of it. It seems this is just her mentality-to see a problem and fix it them. She basically said how she just lets life lead her along, and she follows her gut. This is a common perspective, especially of artist, but not one I quite understand. I do hope this will inspire more people to be in charge of their own life. As an outsider I just thought actors had to wait to be called on and that was just the risky factor that plagued the field. I had not even considered that they could fix their own problem by just…eliminating the middleman? I do wonder how successful she will be, not that I doubt he, but this could open a whole new door for independent contractors everywhere.
