Carrie: The Musical scares up some excitement at Studio

DC Theatre Scene: When it premiered on Broadway in 1988, Carrie: The Musical lasted just 16 previews and five performances, earning a dubious place in theater history as one of the Great White Way’s biggest flops of all time.

While I have never seen Carrie: The Musical, I have seen the original ‘80s movie. The scene when Carrie gets the pigs blood poured over her is an iconic moment. This unforgettable mass murder at the end of the story is a crucial part of the story that makes it so jaw dropping and horrific. By adding the elements required of a musical to this movie in order to create a stage adaption sounds like an interesting challenge that has yet to be overcome. To be unable to capture that successfully is a disappointment for the production. I am curious to see what the future holds for other companies planning on putting on this show. Maybe it really is all about artistic interpretation and the show has yet to be discovered by someone who can conquer its technical challenges?
