I think it will be really interesting to watch the process of this animation coming to life, and from a design aspect what parts of the animation they can transfer to the stage. Additionally, I'm interested in the casting of the show, and how much of the original movie cast they will use, considering that before the actors were only voices, now they must be physical as well. Some actors voices may not match up with their physicality in terms of the characters they were portraying.
First off, I have not seen the film Frozen yet, but I plan on seeing it at some point. What I know about frozen is that its an animated movie that Disney want to bring to life in the form of live action theatre. I see many problems with this, for animation is completely different then live acting in film or theatre. These characters are not real and some of them are not even human. Its going to be very interesting to see how the design team decides to capture the mood and emotion of the animated movie and translate that to a broadway stage. Marshmallow, Sven, and Olaf stand out as particularly challenging characters to make live and performed by humans. I can't wait to see if this will actually get pulled off and still be a hit at that point. Overall, intriguing to say the least and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes.
I actually got the chance to see frozen, and in my opinion it was very similar to most disney movies as such as Tangled. The reason why I think it would be a good to take the story to broadway is because I feel like we haven't really got to see a disney show like this before. We all know the story is a great tale about love, but the show can be done so many ways form the perspective of someone who has seen it from an animated point of view. I'm interested to see not only the casting, but what types of audience members they will reach out to.
When I heard Frozen was going to make its way to Broadway I actually jumped for joy. I have seen the film on multiple occasions and have not stopped listening to the soundtrack. I do feel this may be a bit of a challenge when it comes to moving this animated winter wonderland to a stage. There are many aspects in the movie that will be a definite design challenge once it is on the stage. Even with this I am excited to see how they tackle the show and put it on stage.
I am so excited that Frozen is coming to broadway! This is a kind of atypical move for disney because usually they wait quite a while between movie and stage show, and because of this I actually didnt believe that frozen was making this transition so soon when i first heard about it. I will be very interested to see how they approach the show from a design/technical perspective. Actually right after I saw the movie, I went and asked Kevin how I could build something like the ice castle in the movie because it has to be completely clear ice. I will also be interested to see the way they approach the character of olav since he is an animated snowman, which is much harder to achieve in live performance. They have a strong cast of broadway alums that they used in the movie and I look forward to seeing if they try at all to keep some of those people as they move towards broadway. The last thing that I will be interested to see will be how they conceptualize the show, especially so quickly after the movie was released. Will they do something more conceptual like lion king or stay closer to the original film?
From the moment this was announced, I became very excited. In fact, while still in the movie theater seeing it the first time, I was thinking of how the movie could translate to stage. A few days after having seen it, a friend and I discussed our ideas for costuming and scenery. I'm so glad I will get to see Disney bring yet another great movie to stage, hopefully one that will live up to and exceed my expectations for the production. I hope to see not only great actors in this musical, but also great development on the technical side of the production. Good luck to Disney and I look forward to seeing (and maybe working on) Frozen.
No shame, Frozen is absolutely amazing, however I'm kind of surprised that Disney is pushing this movie through to a musical so soon. I'm not exactly sure how well the songs and story will translate into production form. There is no doubt however that this production will make plenty of money solely based on the fact that it is a Disney production and the movie is already immensely successful.
I am not at all surprised that this is happening. When I saw the movie I know by the end of the first number that Disney will send it to Broadway. The cast is full of big names, and has music and lyrics by Bobby Lopez who did the music and lyrics for both Book of Mormon and Avenue Q. Also, Disney likes to be the first at doing things, and seeing that non one has done anything this big with snow and ice Disney wants to be the first.
