Dancer dies after 'freak occurrence' during rehearsal, death ruled an accident

Chicago Tribune: An aspiring dancer with a small Chicago troupe has died after a steel acrobatics ring fell on him during a rehearsal break at a Northwest Side studio, officials said.
Marco Antonio Huicochea Gonzàlez, 22, died Monday afternoon after the accident in the 5000 block of Kimberly Avenue in Albany Park, according to DanceWorks Chicago, which he joined just last year.

It seems that accidents like this have made their way into the news frequently recently, such as the Cirque incidents. I wonder if they are just being more highly publicized or if things like this have always occurred, yet they have not been widely known. It is also tragic that his family lives so far away and probably has not seen him recently. The way the artistic director ended her statement with "[t]here is nothing further to share about this tragedy" is a little curt but I guess she is trying to avoid contact by the press.

Commenting on what Michael said, dangerous accidents are not as rare as one would hope. Cirque incidents are a totally different animal than many other dance genres because peoples lives are dependent on timing. This dancer was failed by rigging.

A falling dance ring, though it was ruled an accident will probably end up being blamed on one party or another because after a death someone needs to be fined or sued. Here is a question that I propose...Who is going to get involved in the investigation? A union, probably, but does OSHA have any involvement? Because even if they do not cover this dancer that ring was clearly not safe, anyone working on or near that stage at any time was put at risk.

Yikes, talk about freak accident. Yet, while it truly is a shame that this incident occurred, I'd like to think that Cirque maintains some of the highest levels of performer safety measures. I feel that for the amount of incredible work that Cirque puts on, the number of on site injuries is relatively low. Perhaps Cirque injuries garner more publicity and attention in the media due to their high profile name.
