Pittsburghers are going crazy for giant duck photo ops

TribLIVE: For the past few weeks, Pittsburghers have flocked around the town's newest celebrity like pseudo-paparazzi, clamoring for the best shot possible.
The giant rubber duck floating at Point State Park is certainly photogenic, and each day models for folks wielding everything from smartphones and iPads to point-and-shoots and professional-grade cameras.

Everyday that I go on my facebook newsfeed I can't help but see at least 5 new selfies of people with the duck, and more than 20 with profile pictures of them with the duck. Yes, the duck is cool. Yes, you got to see the duck. However, now it is getting old. Everyone has a picture with the duck. I am proud that Pittsburgh has the duck, and love that my friends are taking advantage of seeing it. However, I think its time that we stop with the duck, and move on to creating the next thing.

I am not understanding how this article in anyway qualifies as news. The duck is so much fun and makes so many people happy and it is a novelty. Why wouldn't people be taking pictures with it? Even though this article was not outrightly positive, I was very glad to see a non-negative article about the duck. I am so tired of everyone hating on it. I don't understand why some people think every piece of art out there has to be this amazing achievement with all of this deep meaning behind it to be something worth seeing. Can't there be art that people enjoy just because its fun to look at. One of the most amazing things about it is that young children can experience it and enjoy it just as much as the elderly can. In art that is a pretty rare thing and I think that in itself is a great accomplishment.

I think that the cultural phenomena of the duck is an interesting one. Like Jason my newsfeed is covered wit pictures of the giant duck, which leads me to think about why I am seeing all these pictures of people posing with it and posting it on Facebook. One reason I think it is the giant duck is a limited opportunity and so taking pictures with the duck is merely a way to capture it in time. Another reason is that we are just so blown away by the size of the duck, that it is just another neat thing we have to share with our friends. The duck also is change to show all our friends that we too have been to point park and taken a photo with the duck. As if it was a cancerous trend. One of my favorite thing is to take these trends and to have a push again the meaning. I ant to take this seemingly innocent duck and pair it with something a little darker in nature. Either way I think the duck photos are great and seeing people take photos with them reveals a little something about their nature and their use of Facebook.
