“ONE Singular Sensation, Part 2: Sound Design”

LiveDesign: A veteran sound designer for Cirque du Soleil, Jonathan Deans listened to the songs and watched the images to bring the experience of Michael Jackson’s music videos to the stage for Michael Jackson ONE™ at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. “The show is Michael’s music and dance moves, with Cirque du Soleil elements to add a twist to it,” says Deans, who went to numerous concerts to refresh himself with concert sound, as his goal was to “recreate the feeling of going to a concert, not a showroom or a theatre. Most people remember seeing Michael on video or if they were lucky enough to see him in concert.”

In a show like this, sound design would probably be the most essential aspect. It's great to see how much attention was put into making it sound like it should. I was pretty astonished at the sheer number of speakers involved to create the full experience -- it seems like a pretty massive investment, though to think of the scale of most Cirque shows, it does make sense.

It sounds like a pretty intense show, and I would absolutely love to see it. I saw Mystere in Las Vegas a few years ago, and I'd be curious to compare the two and see how exactly they incorporated the characteristic Cirque style into Michael's music.

Being that this is a show centered around the music and performances of Michael Jackson it is no surprise to me that there is a very serious and innovative sound design to this show. The sheer scale of the rig is a testament to the innovation at hand here. 5,412 speakers in a Left-Center-Right configuration in every seat is astonishing. Having seen a Cirque show in the past and knowing how awesome they are I'd love to be able to see this one, and maybe be able to pick the brain of the designer, I feel like I can learn a lot from him.
