Guest Post: Let's Change the Conversation About Women Directors
Women and Hollywood: A few weeks ago, as Jane Campion's TV series Top Of The Lake drew to a close, Marie Claire UK wrote an article entitled '11 facts about the director that will blow your mind' where the second most interesting fact was her marital status.
This time I wasn't surprised. A few weeks earlier, around the time of Wadjda's UK release, I was shocked to find that when I Googled Haifaa Al Mansour, the first word to pop up after her name was 'husband'. It's the same scenario with Belle director Amma Asante.

AMEN. I read the Marie Claire article referenced in here, and was astounded at just how stupid it was. A female director's marital status should have no effect on her artistic abilities, her popularity as a director, or any other aspect of her career. It's 2013, and only one woman has won an Oscar for directing. Only four have even been nominated. As the article states, male characters still have a majority of the screen time, and what little time is given to female characters is usually for scenes in which women are objectified or shows as objects of attraction, not strong human beings that female viewers could look up to. I hope that in a landmark year for theatre where women took home both of the best director awards, a statement can be made about how TV and Film need to keep evolving too and put more women on screen and behind the camera.
