Government shutdown
ARTSblog: It seems inevitable. When U.S. Senators take to the Senate floor and immediately follow their words insisting they don’t support a federal government shutdown with, “but if it were to occur,” it conveys a sense of forecasted inevitability. - See more at: http://blog.artsusa.org/tag/government-shutdown/#sthash.dIG8gHXp.dpuf

This is just another reason why shutting down the government over a disagreement is never a good solution. It is disappointing the way Congress and the White House seem resigned to the fact that the shut down is inevitable. Parts of the article that really struck me were that in 1995 almost 2 million would-be visitors never made it to federal cultural centers and that artists-in-residence housed in the National Park System lose their progress on their projects and shelter/sustainability.
I really just do not understand this whole government shut down thing in the least. It seems like two parents telling their child that he cannot have his dinner until they decide who is going to wash the dishes. I mean, seriously, just make a decision and move on with their lives, so the rest of America can move on with theirs. I don't know too, too much about this but it seems to me that the government is doing itself, and America, more harm than good by shutting down. Also I did not think this would be affecting me personally so I had not thought too much about it after we had our very in-depth discussion on it in directing this week. However, just this afternoon I was working on a group project and we were googling to see who in the government has the power to enact voting laws and when we couldn't find it we were going to call an agency and ask, only to discover that the majority of government agencies are not answering their phones because of the shutdown.
I agree with April. I think that the government shut down isn't helping anyone or anything and is only making things worse. The same incident happened to my group when we were doing some research and couldn't find answers to our questions because the shutdown was preventing it. I wonder if they really even considered the extent of what the government would affect, should it actually shutdown. I also wonder if any progress is actually being made. This article pointed out some really important issues that are being completely ignored because of all this. The Visas and the Passports not getting processed seems like something that is going to have a huge effect on the country and it is just being cast aside as one more thing that can't be dealt with so long as no one can agree.
I was really happy to see an article on the blog about the shutdown because being on a college campus has made me really feel like I'm in a bubble. I barely hear about the outside world, so this was a helpful article to me. I definitely did not realize all of the side effects of a government shutdown, in terms of how it would impact all these smaller industries and facilities. It seems like a very irresponsible and careless action on the Republican's part to shutdown the government over Obamacare. Allowing all of these cultural and artistic institutions to suffer just shows a disregard for what is best for the people. But I guess their opposition to Obamacare already shows that.
I am extremely disappointed with our countries government right now. America is supposed to be a nation of prosperity and happiness, our founding fathers built our country on these concepts. Each year it seems like these principals are disregarded more and more. Obama has been working really hard to try and fix our nation after the economic collapse, and I don't think people give him enough credit for what he has done. Creating affordable healthcare for those who need it is HUGE. The fact that the republican party has shutdown our government causing further economic instability because they don't like Obamacare is absolutely ridiculous. As the president outright said in a press conference the republican party is fully to blame and this does not have to go on. That being said I sure hope they figure this out before it has any serious consequences that our generation will most likely be responsible for cleaning up years down the road.
Being in the CMU bubble can really inhibit our understanding of the outside world. Its interesting to see and realize how many students here don't even know about the government shutdown. I think as things get worse and people begin to realize how many institutions and services will shutdown due to the Government, then people will see just how drastic the situations is. It saddens me that artists and art institutions will loose funding due to this ridiculous showdown. While the government is deciding what to due, everyone is involved and affected, even in the smallest ways.
I think that the shutdown of the government is disappointing to say the least. For a country founded on such great ideals as ours a shutdown is not what anybody wanted I'm sure. Though unfortunate, the shutdown seemed inevitable. It seems that many people are very quick to point out that it is one party's fault for the whole thing when really its so much bigger than that. Unfortunately the shutdown seemed to occur due to the lack of bipartisan agreements in the creating of our budget that caused the shutdown. Basically, both parties seemed to be fighting for their own personal needs and desires rather than thinking of the country as a whole and until they compromise their is no telling how long this shutdown will occur.
