Broadway Idiot Movie Review & Film Summary (2013)

Roger Ebert: Late in "Broadway Idiot," the documentary about the Broadway musical version of Green Day's "American Idiot," an onscreen newspaper review's headline describes the show as "a surly, cynical grandchild of 'Hair.'" The documentary cites it as an example of negative criticism, which was probably the reviewer's intention.

This could be an interesting documentary to watch. I wasn't even aware that there was one being developed for American Idiot. These documentaries are an interesting insight into the world of the theatre. Every Little Step, the documentary about the A Chorus Line revival, was interesting to watch. Granted it seemed to be more about the casting process than the actual creation of the show, which while interesting, wasn't very insightful, and seemed to be more along the lines of competition shows or MTV's Legally Blond search show. I hope that the Broadway Idiot documentary shows more of the all around creation of the show and not just one aspect. I'll have to watch it and see.

While I actually agree with Tyler, Every Little Step is amazing. I do question this movie just because American Idiot was simply an awful show. I think it was so bad due to Green Day. Green Day is a band trapped in the middle of things. They are not old enough to be classic yet and not young enough to be hip. So they falls in this weird middle ground. Also Green Day stated out as so many bands to with a cult fallowing and then sort of forayed into pop culture but didn't really get big enough to be immediately recognizable to the public. They are not really grunge and not really punk and not really rock they are an amalgamation of things that don't add up to a musical.

The reason that American Idiot is compared to hair is because A) both shows don't really have plots and B) both shows are trying to look at counter cultures and anytime you try to put counter culture on Broadway it doesn't work out... except for maybe Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
