August Wilson Center CEO says closing rumors aren’t true

New Pittsburgh Courier: Last week the New Pittsburgh Courier received word that the August Wilson Center for African American Culture would be closing its doors on May 30 due to financial difficulties. When news broke on May 10 of massive layoffs at the Center, it seemed the rumors could be true, but the Center’s interim president and CEO Oliver Byrd said the Pittsburgh community shouldn’t count the AWC out yet.

It was exciting when they opened the August Wilson Center. And then I kind of forgot about it. I have been hearing about it recently because of the impending "closing" which is apparently just a rumor. Our directing professor told us it was a great idea but they only do a certain kind of play and it does not appeal to enough people for them to actually stay afloat. The CEO seems to be on the right track though. It sucks that so many people are being laid off, but if they are overstaffed and not doing very well it might be the only chance they have of staying afloat.

This article is from this past May. It looks like the leadership at the August Wilson Center hasn't done the best job in looking to the future, as it sound like they are now declaring bankruptcy. It appears that the rumors floating around last May are about to come true. From my uneducated perspective, it seems as though the board and leadership of the AWC was hopelessly optimistic when looking at the future of their organization
