Fake Events
www.controlbooth.com: Why do professors insist upon assigning projects that require getting quotes from real companies for fake events? I have one I'm just finishing that requires quoting an entire conference. I'm sure Phoenix conference centers, hotels, caterers, rental companies, ect are thrilled over this.

After reading the question and a bunch of the posts, it's clear that there is a consenus on the answer, and I agree with it. Most people seem to be saying that, yes, it is good learning experience to be able to deal directly with companies, but costing them time and money isn't the way to do it. By identifying that the "event" is part of a project for school, the people at the company can find time when they aren't working on an actual quote and give the students some information. In addition, another possible solution would be for the students to go to a company as a group so that instead of 100 people needing information, it would be between 1 and 10 groups. Hopefully this problem can be solved soon and professors will cooperate so that companies giving quotes will not waste valuable time on fake events.
