Disney Shows in Development

NYTimes.com: In addition to “The Jungle Book,” Disney Theatrical Group has several other titles in development — some just ideas and concepts, some with scripts and scores under way. Only one, the new musical “Aladdin,” has been confirmed for Broadway, set to open next spring at the New Amsterdam Theater after a tryout run in Toronto. A spokesman for Disney declined to comment on the projects, but a rundown was compiled from theater artists and executives with knowledge of the plans, who all spoke on condition of anonymity because the projects — other than “Aladdin” and “The Jungle Book” — are considered confidential.

I think Disney is such an interesting player in the performing arts industry. They are able to produce smash, box office-breaking shows such as "The Lion King" and "Newsies", but they too, are curse to a flop every once and a while ("Tarzan"). Some of the upcoming shows have promise and some do not. As I read some reviews of "The Jungle Book", I was not surprised. Everyone said that the visuals were fantastic, but the story lacked. I feel like that is now becoming a problem with large budget shows. But a show like "Freaky Friday" presents an interesting situation. Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey are very talented artists and have great promise, but will their talent transfer to such a story as "Freaky Friday". I think that Disney is still trying to find their niche as a big-budget, heart-warming story teller with theatre.
