Seminar will offer hands-on training in film industry technical trades

KATC.com | Acadiana-Lafayette, Louisiana: The Mayor's Office of Cultural Economy, in partnership with Jefferson Parish, New Orleans Video Access Center (NOVAC) and International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 478 will host a free two-day weekend seminar in the grip and electric trades for the film industry on February 16 and 17, 2013. The seminar, called "Ready Set Film," will target 40 regional workers with an interest in working in the city's growing film industry. NOVAC is currently seeking applicants for this program, particularly those with some experience in electrical, construction or comparable trades.

This is not the first that we've seen seminars like this put up in up-and-coming areas with big film tax credits and large-scale projects on the horizon, but an insufficient workforce. It's beneficial to the workers, who will be more prepared to take film jobs which require some basic training, the union gets a bunch of prospective new members, and the city is able to entice films to use their less expensive local labor instead of having to bring in outside people (who put a bigger drain on accommodations in the city, while losing the potential for income taxes from local labor). I'd be interested to see numbers from this training session, and subsequent union memberships as a result.
