Philly Stagehand Strike Continues

www.backstage.com: The stagehand strike in Philadelphia continues to rage on. Negotations between the Philadelphia Theatre Company and Local 8 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), the union representing its 27 stagehands, dissolved Jan. 22 after six hours, PTC Artistic Director Sara Garonzik told Backstage.

I'm wondering where this will go. I assume that the theater is hiring non union. I'm glad that they are doing a less elaborate show for safety reasons. If they didn't and hired people who didn't necessarily have the training someone could get injured or worse.

There are many IATSE locals throughout the country, and the one trait that is consistent among all of them is that they never stop complaining. It's always "every house NEEDS to be a union house" or "I can't work under these conditions!" Okay, yeah, certain standards should be observed for workers. Nobody should have to sit on a bed of nails or work a 68 hour call without a meal or bathroom break. Those are certainly already rules, and even non-union houses understand that those demands are ridiculous. But, for the most part, union workers have it pretty good. Four hour minimum, have to serve food if it's over a certain time limit, steady pay rate. They have a lot of things, and very rarely are they grateful for any of them.
