Stage review: The numbers are terrific in 'Flashdance,' but this musical feels bloated
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: OK, since this is the premiere of a new version of "Flashdance the Musical" (different from the one that spent a few years in the United Kingdom) and since Pittsburgh is the first stop on its shakedown national tour, I'll break my usual rule and start out by giving it a tentative grade.
As follows: this is not, it turns out, one of those occasions of Pittsburgh triumph, like a Super Bowl or World Series (remember them?). It's more like an expected midseason victory or maybe just a tie.

I saw this and I loved it. I never saw the movie but I knew the basic idea going into the theater. I'm not going to argue that the musical wasn't a little cluttered with side stories but they all made sense, and I think without them the class issues the musical addresses would have been lost. They let us see not just Alex's life but also just the general struggle of the 80's working class (outdated or no it still adds a lot). The choreography was really cool especially in the last number where Alex has a 3 minute solo dance. There was one really obvious slip up at the beginning though where there were 4 dancers and they all seem to magically put on these skirts at one point in the dance, but one of them fell of during the remainder of the dance. Other then that little wardrobe malfunction I was pretty much blown away by the dancing. One last thing I would mention is that the review kind of glosses over the media design. It only said there were screens involved but the media was pretty much constant through the entire show and there was usually a lot of it going on. But it very well blended in with the set. Totally worth seeing if you get the chance.
