New Agreement Means $2.2M in Back Pay, New Work for Florida IATSE Members

www.aflcio.org: Stagehands in West Palm Beach, Fla., will secure regular work and share some $2.2 million in back pay after Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 500 and the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts reached agreement on a five-year contract that settles charges in a dispute that began in 2001. The agreement was reached in late December and approved today by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

Well coming from Florida myself, I am happy to hear that union workers from home are being fairly represented. Admittedly, I still am fuzzy on the operations of IATSE and how union rules work. But I do know that breaking labor laws is something that should be dealt with diligently, especially when it comes to working in a place that could require long hours and dangerous work. It is also impressive that a case this size reached federal court and I'm glad to see our federal government playing a part in right treatment of workers. It's just a shame that the agreement was only reached after a strike.
