TribLIVE: The new year begins with a new musical.
“Flashdance — The Musical,” will have its world premiere here Tuesday at Heinz Hall as a presentation of PNC Broadway Across America — Pittsburgh.
“Flashdance” is best known as the 1983 Pittsburgh-based movie about a young woman who works as a welder in a steel mill, but dreams of landing a spot in a classical dance academy.

I'm always nervous when a movie is brought to the stage. Not that these reservations are unfounded. Both elf the musical and a christmas story the musical did quite poorly, but after the recent success of Newsies I'm trying to be a little more positive. After all, Flashdance was originally intended to be a musical which gives it some merit. Plus since it's already dance heavy that might help with it's success. Also since it's not going straight to Broadway, it will have some time to fix the problems with the musical.
I am honestly quite surprised this is just now being turned in to a musical. The movie was a fast, bright and shining musical already originally written for the stage, so it seems odd that it took as long as it did to be produced into a full theatrical production. The article talks about a previous attempt at this production that tried to make the story darker which does not sound like a good idea and does not seem fitting for the story. Hopefully this production will turn out better.
