Revival: 'The Pearl Fishers' less than the sum of its parts
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Curiosity is the starting point in exploring neglected works by composers who have created supreme masterpieces, such as "Carmen" by Georges Bizet. Pittsburgh Opera`s revival of Bizet`s "The Pearl Fishers," which opened Saturday night, showed the earlier opera has much more to offer than one hit duet but did not hit its weaknesses.

From the title of this article I was expecting the author to criticize the design elements of the production but instead he goes straight for the story. I have never seen or heard this show but am tempted to go since it is not a work that is commonly done. The author is pretty nice to the entire team stating that even when something didn't work the performers were still working their hardest but it just doesn't work. I think this kind of review is interesting. I think as a whole reviews are way too flowery with the way they describe shows. What I mean by this is that we have stopped objectively looking at what worked and what didn't and have now started to make things sound better then they are. I think there is a fear of hurting people's feeling and profits. I like people who review shows to have strong opinions that they can back up. Just because one person didn't like it doesn't mean I won't see it and that I think is where the fear lies.
