Unless you work in theater, you might not even know about the Prague Quadrennial, a gala performance design conference, exhibition, and festival featuring new work from 70 countries. "There's nothing like it anywhere else in the world," says Susan Tsu, artistic director of the 2011 United States exhibition.
Although the event takes place in Prague every four years, this year you don't have to go any further than Carnegie Mellon to catch the excitement. Susan Tsu brings the best of the Quadrennial to her presentation Wednesday, November 9, sponsored by the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh.
"Imagine our entire Pittsburgh Convention Center turned over to nothing but theater design," Tsu says. "That's about half the size of the Prague event - but it takes over the whole city, as well." Tsu's presentation will focus on three main areas: Canada's exhibition of fabric research for Cirque du Soleil; craft work from
Spain featuring fiber, textiles, and clothing; a selection of extreme costumes, a juried show all countries could enter. Three works from US teams were chosen for the 30-piece extreme costume exhibition.
Join us for an exhilarating evening of art, costume, and drama. As Tsu says, "You can't help but be inspired by the many different ways designers see the world."
Professor of Costume Design at Carnegie Mellon University, Susan Tsu has designed for opera, television, and theater - both on and off Broadway, regionally, and internationally. Awards include the NY Drama Desk, NY Drama Critics, NY Young Film Critics, LA Distinguished Designer, and a Kennedy Center Medal of Achievement. Tsu headed the costume programs at Boston University and the University of Texas at Austin before coming to CMU, her alma mater.
