‘Entertainment Capital’ Offers Much to Explore

USITT Sightlines: Plans for the 2012 Conference & Stage Expo include some exciting conference sessions that will take advantage of Long Beach's location within the "Entertainment Capital of the World." These panel discussions and presentations promise to inform USITT members about the many avenues for creativity and careers in southern California.

Disney/ABC Corp. really seems to have it's hands all over this conference, much more than it's involvement last year where they were involved in just a few panels. And although this article does mostly mention costume related sessions, the ones on the film industry could also be really informative since where better to talk about film than Southern California, in a place with so many film resources. It will be exciting to see what kind of presentations Disney will put on since it is so close to home.

Aw man, seeing the offerings this year really makes me wish I could go! The Disney connection is a fair given, considering how active they were even during a year outside a theme park state last year (although it would be interesting to see the ratio of Disneyland to Disney World representation this year). I'm more intrigued by the cruise ship and film/tv offerings this year - the former in particular seems to never be discussed around CMU, while the latter has only a few opportunities available for PTM folk to experience in-school. The offerings at Long Beach this year highlight exactly why we do the LA Showcase - there are lots of opportunities to put our theatrical knowledge to use, even off the stage (or at least a stage on solid land).

Talked to a CMU alum for our scene shop biography project this past week. He talked about how CMU grads need to combine innovation with traditional theater craftsmanship to get ahead in the industry. Looks like these panel descriptions have the same philosophy in mind.
What class do you take to land a job on Dancing with the Stairs?
What standard scenery do you draw to help with the fabrication for Disney World?
The answer is there really aren't any classes specifically designed for that but there are concepts and approaches we as student can grasp to contribute as working professionals. While the purpose for USITT isn't the pedagogical development of future technician, it's comforting to see that the panel discussions about the industry mirror the lessons and expectations presented to us here at CMU.
