How much does touring Broadway impact the economy.

PRODUCER’S PERSPECTIVE: "This report details the economic impact that Broadway had on the nation in 2008-2009 by exporting its productions from Times Square to Tennessee, Florida, California, and just about everywhere in between. Yep, Broadway truly is the longest street in the US. We're all a lot closer than we think.

I would hope with a report like this the government, local or national, would work to build an arts community in the city to attract tourism. It doesn't matter if its local or semi-local, these shows attract people out and spend money in town which they normally wouldn't be inclined to do. So the fact that the government keeps slashing art programs and keeping it low on their priority is a rather ridiculous. Imagine what New York City would be if it didn't have Broadway. The arts, especially theatre, attract crowds more than museums or historical site, especially local tourism where locals are less likely to visit the same museum or historic site. The arts can change and continue to attract people out with new products in the same space.

I agree that this article shows that making cuts to arts programs is detrimental rather than helpful to the economy. I wonder how these numbers would compare to what they were a few years ago before the recession.

The fact that Broadway touring shows can have this much impact is spectacular. Being well versed in the arts is another reason why more people should vouch for Broadway touring shows because it would not only help the economy but education in the arts. Working on many touring shows in the past as regional crew, I feel that touring shows greatly benefit the art community as well as communities across America. If people are given the opportunity to attend a touring show it is more likely that the arts, especially the performing arts, will never die. Touring shows and the success which they provide prove that theatre is a continuous and relevant part of our culture.

The amount of money that Broadway generates is incredible. I think it's great that the arts can make this much money, but I wish it was not Broadway touring that was making this money. Clearly theatre has a huge impact and could potentially influence a lot of people. If only off-broadway and more independent work could make the same profit.
