AEA Safety Procedures Statement

Actors' Equity Association: "Actors' Equity is committed to making the theatrical work environment as safe as possible. We start to identify potential risks in new productions as early as possible, examining such potential risk elements as raked stages, smoke and haze, stunts, firearms, flying, and unusual or overly-demanding choreography.

It is interesting to get a glimpse of how theater functions from an entirely managerial standpoint. Aspects of a show which add to the environment, and ambiance become safety concerns. This statement provides a perspective on the multifaceted nature of producing a theatrical production. The opening descriptions of the safety requirements emerging just as early as the considerations of how to properly illustrate motifs and themes emphasize the importance of cohesion in the theater world.

I was glad to see this article after hearing so much about spider-man in the news; there has been quite an uproar about the irresponsibility associated with this show, and I have found it hard to believe that anybody involved with the production has been grossly negligent. Injuries for cast and crew alike must be a relatively common occurrence in large productions, but I think that this production has received particular attention because of the stakes involved (flying, and being the most expensive show ever). After watching and reading interviews with Chris Tierney and other members of the production that consistently complimented the crew on its safety precautions, I believe it to be a good thing that Equity is not further fueling the fire.
